Acquisition Number: P-242
Medium: poster
Wearing the Marine Corps uniform, commercial artist and cartoonist Paul Woyshner applied his skills to inspiring Americans to support and join the Service during World War I, the lean inter-war years, and World War II. In this 1929 recruiting poster, he featured a Marine pilot preparing to fly a de Havilland DH-4, known as the “Liberty Plane.” Marines flew the DH-4 in combat in World War I—the only U.S.-made land plane to see combat in Europe—and for training during the 1920s. Several saw action against Nicaraguan rebels in 1927. The pilot has his goggles, flight suit, helmet, and seat cushion parachute pack in place.
