Charles Waterhouse was a painter, illustrator, and sculptor, who created hundreds of works that documented the history of the Marine Corps and, specifically, the heroism of Medal of Honor recipients. This painting depicts Second Lieutenant Ralph Talbot flying barely 50 feet over enemy territory on 14 October 1918 to escape German aircraft that had fired upon and wounded his rear gunner, Corporal Robert Guy Robinson. This crew, part of an all-Marine air strike on a railroad yard at Thielt, Belgium, received Medals of Honor for their actions
