Acquisition Number: 2012.1187.350
Medium: Poster

The creator of the popular comic “Flash Gordon” enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1944. Commissioned as a captain, Alex Raymond was assigned to the Division of Public Relations, for which he created illustrations and posters that helped document World War II and inspire others to join the Marine Corps and support the war effort. Drill Sergeant Florence Fawley was the model for this recruiting poster, encouraging women to serve in the Reserve. In the background are two well-known Marine Corps fighters, a Grumman F4U Wildcat and a Vought F4U Corsair. A third of all Women Marines held jobs in aviation at Marine Corps air stations stateside. Major Raymond demobilized in 1946 and returned to commercial illustrating and cartooning.
