This experienced Corsair pilot received the Medal of Honor for two combat actions with Marine Fighter Squadron 124, based on Guadalcanal. “His valiant leadership and his daring skill as a flier served as a source of confidence and inspiration” to others. First Lieutenant Walsh was credited with 21 downed enemy aircraft during his service in the Pacific theater. He flew transport aircraft during the Korean War, which supported the 1st Marine Division. Lieutenant Colonel Walsh retired after 29 years in 1962.
Artist Charles Waterhouse researched each Medal of Honor recipient he painted, creating the small oval portraits as his way of recognizing their accomplishments. After completing these works in his 80s, he donated them to the National Museum of the Marine Corps.
