A Marine North American PBJ-1 (or B-25 in Army Air Force nomenclature) from Marine Attack Squadron 611 overflies the island of Emirau in January 1944. A force of 4,000 Marines landed on the island in March 1944, where an air base was established. The Marine Corps operated eight squadrons of PBJs, some specially outfitted with radar to hunt and sink Japanese ships at night.
