Thanks to the exploits of its flamboyant leader, Major Gregory “Pappy” Boyington, Marine Fighter Squadron 214, better known as the “Black Sheep Squadron,” achieved celebrity status. Boyington’s wartime autobiography, Baa Baa Black Sheep, published in 1958 and later adapted into a television series, remains a classic World War II memoir. This painting was commissioned in 1999 and subsequently gifted to the National Museum of the Marine Corps.
