Navy hospital corpsmen provide medical assistance to wounded Marines on the battlefield. In 1968 alone, Marine helicopters flew nearly 42,000 medical evacuation flights and transported more than 67,000 wounded individuals. Some 2,700 Navy corpsmen supported Marine operations in Vietnam; 638 were killed in action.
