In 1967-1968, three Marine combat artists produced paintings of the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk at Chu Lai Air Base, Vietnam. The lightweight, nimble A-4 flew its attack missions primarily in the daytime, leaving maintenance to the “night shift,” as seen in this painting by Mike Gish. The single-seater was a first-order U.S. weapon during the Vietnam War. A Marine A-4 likely dropped the last bombs on Vietnam, and the last Marine POW, Captain James P. Walsh, was a Skyhawk pilot. The Marine Corps retired the aircraft type in 1990 after 30+ years in the air.
