At the start of the war, the Emergency Fleet Corporation of the United States Shipping Board contracted with American International Shipbuilding Corporation to construct ships for the war effort. Hog Island, south of Philadelphia, became the largest shipyard in the world, employing 30,000 workers who built 122 freighters and transport ships between 1917 and 1921. This image is of the first ship launched, a transport christened SS Quistconck in honor of the Lenape tribal name for the shipyard site.
