This is a preliminary sketch for a large mural Daugherty created in an open-air studio in front of the New York Public Library to promote the Fourth Liberty Loan Bond Drive. Though his style looks spontaneous, these sketches show that the artist carefully considered his options before putting brush to canvas. In his final product, the gun crew remained the same, but he reduced the number of other elements and rearranged them to strengthen the focus.
