One of 50 destroyers authorized by Congress in August 1916 in preparation for war, USS Little (DD-79) was one of the few to be completed and put into service during the war. It served on convoy escort duty between the east coast of the United States and Brest, France, from May 1918 to the end of the war. Destroyers of this era were re-inventions of earlier motor torpedo boats, intended to protect larger ships and convoys from self-propelled torpedoes, which had been invented in the second half of the 19th century.
