Paul Woyshner designed two recruiting posters for the Marine Corps in 1917, both variations on “Do your duty.” His first poster urged: “Do your duty: Join the U.S. Marines. Help them defend America on land and sea.” The second asked: “He did his duty. Will you?” Woyshner re-interpreted verbiage from a 1916 British recruiting poster of Sir Lord Roberts of Kandahar produced in 1916 by the Parliamentary Recruiting Committee, which showed a flag-draped portrait of Lord Roberts and a similar message about duty.
