With the American entry into World War I in April 1917, the Marine Corps Publicity Bureau staff was already anticipating what types of imagery they would utilize in their recruiting campaigns. Gaul’s work is one representative example. In the “Recruiters’ Bulletin” of July 1917, a Marine Corps author notes that Gaul “has just executed a handsome picture in anticipation of future events. The picture shows a party of Marine bombers cutting their way through a barbwire entanglement.” Gaul used thick layers of paint to create depth.
