The Emergency Fleet Corporation was established by the United States Shipping Board on 16 April 1917. Through it, the United States government funded the acquisition of merchant ships by construction, purchase, seizure, or other means to ensure that the nation and its allies would be able to acquire food and supplies for the war effort by sea.
