Coughlin donated this painting to the Marine Corps Publicity Bureau in June 1917. The “Recruiters’ Bulletin” noted that the painting “introduced up-to-date elements, the trench helmet, and Lewis machine gun.” The Marine Corps used this painting for the 1917 recruiting poster “Go over the Top with the U.S. Marines.”
