Skilled nurses were in chronic short supply during World War I. In order to help fill the gap for military and civilian hospitals, the Student Nurse Reserve advocated shortening the normal 2-to-3 year nurses’ training programs at teaching hospitals and helped send newly graduated nurses to places where they were needed most. In the Navy, nurses were the only females allowed to remain on active duty after demobilization.
