The United States Food Administration was created in 1917 to help Europe. The war had decimated food production, and people were starving. Herbert Hoover was appointed head of the administration and was successful in galvanizing the public to save food, create victory gardens, and cut food consummation. By the end of the war, the U.S. Food Administration had sent more than 33 million pounds of food to Europe. This poster created by Paus depicts a desperate Europe. The figures, tied to a dark ominous iron cross representing the Central Powers, are pointing to the quote by noted Quaker poet and abolitionist John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-92). Paus used imagery designed to connect with the public and spur their participation in the effort to send food to Europe. Gift of Mr. Ronald E. Echols, Sr.
