The artist was the first American combat artist authorized to land in Normandy (D-Day + 6). He had
originally been assigned to land on H-Hour + 20 minutes, but on the advice of the chief of the British
historical program, the Americans reassigned him so that he would survive the assault and be available to document the rest of the European campaign.
