I painted this watercolor painting of The Pioneer Pavilion en plein air on a beautiful autumn day in Mill Creek Park. One of the oldest structures in Youngstown, The Pioneer Pavilion constructed from hand cut sandstone was a mill for carding and fulling wool in 1821. A millrace from Mill Creek and a waterwheel on the west side supplied the power. In the 1830s it was converted to a storage facility for the nearby Mill Creek Furnace and later served as a cattle barn. In 1891, Volney Rogers purchased the property and in 1893 turned it into a dining and dancing facility, naming it Pioneer Pavilion. Generations of area residents continue to enjoy social events in this historic landmark. Although I couldn’t find it documented anywhere, one day while going through the stone cave addition a manbpointed out a carving of a child’s face he heard was the image of one of the stonemason’s son.
