Machine Gunners, Argonne 1918
Lester G. Hornby (1882-1956)
Accession Number: 2012.1166.8
Original work: Etching on Paper
Original size:

Hornby, who accompanied the American Expeditionary Forces as they fought through the six weeks of the Meuse-Argonne offensive, documented through his sketches the tough job of moving horse-drawn equipment through the muddy bombed out terrain. In a letter written near Romagne while with Battalion B, 146th Field Artillery, he writes: “The people at home cannot begin to realize the work the boys are doing. It is impossible to comprehend the courage and tenacity that this turning of the tables stands for without actually seeing them in action.” Gift of the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation
