The artist conducts a sweep in a village near Kismayu, Somalia, during Operation Restore Hope in March 1993. For five months, the U.S. led a multi-national force that was charged with conducting a United Nations-mandated humanitarian mission in Somalia during a period of extreme internal violence that left the population starving. International assistance was opposed by armed factions. Food was delivered, lives were saved, but the civil war continued. Among the casualties were 43 U.S. service members killed and 153 wounded.
