U.S. Marines, wearing white snow camouflage, carry snowshoes, packs, and weapons. They drag their heavier equipment on a sledge, called a polk. One goal of the month-long NATO training exercise, called Teamwork ’84, was to land 12,000 Marines beyond the Arctic Circle in northern Norway in severe weather. More than 150 NATO ships and 300 aircraft participated in the February-March 1984 operation.
