Lieutenant Colonel John J. Capolino, USMCR |
|
Accession Number: 2012.1081.14
Original work: Pastel on Illustration Board
Original size:
Marines of the 1st and 2d Battalion, 5th Marines, under the command of Maj George W. Hamilton, USMC, cross a narrow bridge on the last night of the war, 10 November 1918. Rich tones of dark blue and brown with touches of white set off the line of Marines from the grim background as they prepare to cross the bridge. To ensure that his audience understood the historic import of the scenes that he created, Capolino placed a caption on foil or on a painted banner at the top of each, along with the Marine Corps emblem and any awards associated with the action.
