Lockheed Martin KC-130Js are a welcome sight to Marines on the ground and those in other Marine Corps aircraft. They have been providing air-to-air refueling, personnel and cargo transport, emergency evacuations, and other close-air support to fleet operating forces since 2004. Stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina, Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 252 keeps the Hercules flying.
Artist Marc Poole was assigned to document the maintainers of the squadron in August 2019. In this view, Marines are working on the main landing gear of one aircraft, while the other is being prepared to return to the flightline. After a morning rain shower had passed through, the artist sought to capture “the hot, thick, heavy air in the enormity of the hangar interior with the breaking sunlight flooding through the hangar door windows.”
