Accession Number: 2012.1006.21
Original work: Oil on Canvas
Original size: 26 by 36 inches
Artist Albert Michael Leahy flew on several combat missions with All-Weather Fighter Squadron 242 to capture this cockpit-view from a Grumman A-6A Intruder during a dive-bombing run against North Vietnamese antiaircraft guns. Suppressing enemy antiaircraft fire, a highly dangerous mission, reduced the threat of enemy fire to other bombers in the target area. The prominent probe, seen here through the cockpit window, allowed the aircraft to be re-fueled mid-air.
The Ben Hai River, visible to the crew of this aircraft as a curving ribbon through the landscape of central Vietnam, was an important landmark dividing Vietnam into north and south. A demilitarized zone extended about three miles on either side.
