During Operation Desert Storm, 86 Marine McDonnell Douglas AV-8B Harriers operated from airfields and Navy amphibious assault ships. They completed more than 9,000 missions, ranging from escorting helicopters to striking enemy positions well behind the front lines. Five Harriers were lost in combat. Artist Avery Chenoweth painted this Harrier during Desert Storm preparing to launch from an amphibious carrier. A carrier aircraft director, or “yellow shirt,” is responsible for its safe movement on the flight deck and in the hangar bay.
