Christy, a leading American artist and illustrator of the period, produced this Marine recruiting poster in the early 1920s. Marine Corps aviation personnel in 1917 numbered 23 (officers and enlisted); by war’s end, there were 282 officers and 2,180 enlisted. By comparison, more than 30,000 Marines fought on French soil as part of the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I. In this poster, a de Havilland DH-4 prepares to dive against the enemy.
Christy realistically documented the Spanish-American War in 1898 for popular American magazines and painted Colonel Roosevelt’s portrait for a series about the Rough Riders. During World War I, he created recruiting posters for the Marine Corps and Navy and posters that encouraged Americans to buy Liberty war bonds. He painted presidents, socialites, military heroes, and adventurers like Amelia Earhart.
