Soon after Italy entered into the expanding Great War, the Italian Navy Cruiser Giuseppe Garibaldi was part of task force attacking strategic sites on the coast of Croatia. In the early morning of 17 July 1915, the ship was torpedoed by Austro-Hungarian submarine SM U-4. The cruiser sank in a few minutes. Fifty-three crewmen were killed and 525 were rescued by other Italian Navy ships.
