Shower-time in the South Pacific is an important event of the day. The cool water spilling around draws a crowd on all the hot afternoons. This is an enlisted men's shower at the headquarters of the South Pacific Amphibious Force Command. Piped water such as this is a luxury as empty oil drums overhead are the usual method. On the advanced bases these showers are at rite, a social moment when, for a while free of pressing duties and clogging heat, men may chatter and move about in attitudes of relaxed and idle comfort.
