Seized at Hoboken, New Jersey upon entry of the United States into World War I, USS Leviathan, formerly the German passenger ship SS Vaterland, served as a troop transport ship. In its ten round trips between Hoboken and Brest, France it carried more than 119,000 troops eastward. After the Armistice, it participated in the westward flow of men and completed nine trips until September of 1919.
